Helen and I went to the park portaloo before we left. When she came out, she was smiling.

‘What’s up?’ I asked.

‘I’ve never been so happy to get my period,’ she said.

‘Phew! Yeah, you had me worried sick.’

‘I was so scared, Roxy.’

‘We would have worked something out,’ I told her.

First day back at uni, Charlton said, ‘We’re studying performance this semester.’

‘You mean like watch other performers and see how they do it?’ Jules asked.

‘It’s a bit of doing that. But also, you’re going to form a band and you will be graded on your performance.’

I looked around the room and thought, ‘How the hell are we going to do that?’ I mean Kelly wanted to play her full-on drumming, Josh wanted to play guitar solos as fast as he could, and then me, Jules and Alicia were all vocalists and there was no way that either of the three of us were going to admit that one was better than the other.

After Charlton had finished explaining what the performance module was about, he said,‘How about I give you ten minutes to work out how you’re going to work together? Good luck!’ he said, before walking out of the room.

We looked at each other blankly and then Josh said,‘Well, me and Kelly can play metal, and you fellas can too if you give it a try but we’re not playing no country or nothing.’

‘There’s nothing wrong with country, brus,’ Simon said and then slumped over the desk.

‘The blues, that’s all I got in me!’ Jules said, agitated.

‘We’ve got four guitarists, and Roxy and Justin can play keyboard too,’ Alicia said. Simon’s our bass player.’

‘Yep, can’t do much else than that,’ he agreed.

‘I can play guitar, flute or cello,’ Alicia said.

‘Yeah, I heard Metallica played on cello once, it was awesome, sis,’ Josh said.

‘Do you reckon people are going to come and listen to us playing metal?’ I asked, and everyone apart from Josh and Kelly shook their heads.

‘How about we each write down one of our favourite songs and draw them out from a hat, whatever the song and style, that’s what we’ll play?’ said Jules.

We looked at each other – well, all of us apart from the metal heads – like it was worth a shot.

‘I’m not agreeing to that,’ Josh sulked.

‘How about we do it just to see if it gets us on track?’

Simon suggested. Kelly and Josh nodded reluctantly.

Simon placed his cap on the table and we started writing our songs down.

‘Josh, you can pull the rabbit from the hat,’ Jules joked.

We put our pieces of paper in the bag and then Josh picked the winning song. ‘“Midnight Hour”, Wilson Pickett,’ Josh said. ‘Oh shit, does that even have any guitars?’ he asked.

‘That’s soul, man,’ Justin said, looking at me like he was as cool as.

‘Who put that song in there, that’s a good one,’ Simon reckoned.

‘I did,’ Justin said grinning.

‘What kind of music is that anyway?’ Kelly asked.

‘Anyone got data?’ Jules asked, unable to connect to the uni wi-fi.

‘Yeah, I have,’ Justin said.
